Cloudy Day Fishing in Fort Lauderdale

When most Fort Lauderdale visitors think of their dream day deep sea fishing in Fort Lauderdale, there’s a good chance their picturing giant sailfish leaping from picturesque turquoise waters on a cloudless day. But if you ask a local, you might get a different story.

I’m one of those locals that likes days with clouds. Part of it’s because it’s cooler, there’s less glare, and I don’t feel like I need to reapply sunscreen constantly (side note: you can easily get burned on a cloudy day so always wear sunscreen). It’s also because sunrises and sunsets look unspectacular without clouds in the sky.

But mostly, it’s because as a Captain, I’m a weather geek and I like marveling at natures puffy, Charmin ultra-soft creations.

In my opinion, Fort Lauderdale’s most impressive cloud is the cumulonimbus cloud, better known to most as a thunderstorms. These gargantuan monsters rise high into the atmosphere, dwarfing the likes of the world’s tallest mountain peaks. In fact, the largest of the cumulonimbus clouds can easily be twice the height of mount Everest.

If you’re on a Fort Lauderdale fishing charter in the afternoon in the summer and you look towards shore, chances are you’ll see the monsters growing over the mainland. They typically build from rising water vapor in the everglades and then fight the seabreeze as they push eastward towards the Atlantic Ocean.  Most of the time the seabreeze gets the best of them and I have to tell you, there’s no better feeling sitting on your fishing boat in the sun, while you watch all the landlubbers in Fort Lauderdale getting rained on.
